How to Get Online Jobs for Students (No Experience Needed)
How to get online jobs as a student: legit platforms by age, real pay after fees, payout times, taxes, F-1 rules and scam red flags. No experience needed.

To get an online job as a student, first check which legit platforms accept your age, then set up a way to get paid. Start with low-barrier work like paid research studies or website tests. Once you’ve collected some reviews, move into better-paid tutoring or freelancing.
- Pay: at least $8 an hour on paid research studies. Tutoring and freelancing pay whatever you charge, minus platform fees of up to 25%
- Hours per week: 3 to 5 to start, more over breaks
- Startup cost: free (the exception is Upwork’s Connects, at $0.15 each in packs of 10 or more)
- Works from your dorm? yes
First filter: how old are you?
Lots of “online jobs for students” lists skip this part, and it decides everything else.
18 or older: most platforms are open to you. Upwork, Prolific, Wyzant, UserTesting and Survey Junkie all require you to be 18. So does PayPal, and that matters because many of these platforms pay only through PayPal.
13 to 17: the list gets much shorter.
- Fiverr lets 13 to 17 year-olds sell only through an account that a parent or guardian owns and runs. The parent verifies it with their own government ID, and the profile has to say a parent owns it. At 18, you can ask support to move the account over to you. Under-13s are banned. The full rules are on Fiverr’s page for minors.
- Swagbucks accepts users from age 13 and encourages under-18s to get a parent’s permission.
- Wyzant tutoring requires you to be 18, so for most teens the parent-run Fiverr account is the main online route.
If a teen is hired as an employee rather than a freelancer, federal child labor rules apply. At 14 to 15, you can work at most 3 hours on a school day, 8 hours on a non-school day and 18 hours in a school week. All work has to fall between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. (9 p.m. from June 1 to Labor Day). At 16 to 17, there’s no federal hour limit for non-hazardous jobs. Your state may be stricter or require a work permit, and where the rules differ, the stricter one wins.
The shortlist: platforms that actually take students
| Platform | What you do | Age | Pay | Cut or payout |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prolific | Academic studies | 18+ | At least $8/hr | Cash out from $6 via PayPal |
| UserTesting | Test sites and apps out loud | 18+ | $10 per 15 to 20 min test | PayPal, 14 days after the test |
| Rev | Transcription, captions | Not stated | $0.40 to $1.10 per audio minute (transcription) | Weekly via PayPal |
| Wyzant | Tutoring | 18+, US, SSN | Your rate | You keep 75% |
| Upwork | Freelance projects | 18+ | Your rate | 0% to 15% fee, plus Connects |
| Fiverr | Freelance gigs | 13+ via a parent’s account | Your price | You keep 80%, clears in 14 days |
| Survey Junkie | Surveys | 18+ | Varies | Cash out from $5 |
Quick takes:
- No experience at all? Start with Prolific and UserTesting. Prolific requires studies to pay at least $8 an hour. UserTesting also pays $4 for short tests (5 to 7 minutes) and $30 per 30 minutes for live conversations.
- Want a typing job? Rev is the real version. It pays per audio minute, not per minute of your time, and messy audio takes far longer to type than it does to play. You need a computer, reliable internet and strong English.
- Good at a subject? Try Wyzant. You don’t need a teaching certificate, and listing is free. Tutors keep 75% of their posted rate.
- Can you design, edit or write? Try Upwork or Fiverr.
- Surveys: Survey Junkie pays by PayPal, bank transfer or gift card. Think instant-noodle money, not rent money. Our guide to survey jobs for students covers which ones pay.
- Campus routes: Handshake is free for students. If you have financial need, Federal Work-Study is another option: file your FAFSA and say on it that you want work-study. Some schools list remote work-study roles, like the remote volunteer tutor job on Fresno City College’s board, so ask your financial aid office.
Fee math, as an example: say you set your Wyzant rate at $30 an hour (that’s our example, not a typical rate). You keep $22.50. A $50 Fiverr order leaves you $40, and you wait 14 days for it to clear.
What you need (and what you don’t)
You need:
- A laptop and decent Wi-Fi
- A way to get paid, usually PayPal (18+). Survey Junkie also offers bank transfer
- Your Social Security Number, for tutoring sites like Wyzant
- Two or three work samples, such as a strong class essay, a slide deck or a cleanly formatted lab report
You don’t need:
- Work experience or a teaching certificate
- A car
- Money upfront. Real employers never charge you to get a job
How to land your first gig
- Pick two platforms. One for quick cash (Prolific or UserTesting) and one that builds a skill (Wyzant, Upwork or Fiverr).
- Set up payment first. Don’t let your first payout sit there while your PayPal account is still unverified.
- Fill in every profile field. Add a real photo, plus the subjects and tools you’re genuinely good at.
- On Upwork, check the fee before you apply. You see your fee (0% to 15%) before you send a proposal, and it doesn’t change after that. Connects cost money, so only spend them on jobs you’re a strong match for.
- Price for reviews, then raise your rates. Your first few clients are mostly paying you in reviews.
- On Wyzant, expect a reply within 24 to 48 hours of applying.
Does it fit around class?
That’s the whole appeal: no shifts and no commute. Here’s a semester plan:
- Week one: your workload is light, so set up your accounts and finish your profiles now.
- Midterms and finals: stick to Prolific and UserTesting, which you can drop any time. Don’t take freelance orders that are due during exam week.
- Summer break: this is when to grow your tutoring and freelance work.
If you’d rather have set shifts, see our picks for part-time jobs for students.
International students: check before you sign up
On an F-1 visa, you can work on campus for up to 20 hours a week during the semester with approval from your DSO (your school’s international student adviser). Off-campus work needs at least one full academic year of study plus authorization.
Here’s the trap: university career centers say remote work you do while you’re in the US counts as off-campus work, even for a foreign company. Unauthorized work gets your SEVIS record terminated, which means you have to leave the US immediately. Talk to your DSO before you join any platform on this page.
Taxes and financial aid (the boring bit that matters)
This is general info, not tax or financial advice. For your own situation, ask your financial aid office or a tax professional.
- Gig and freelance income counts as self-employment. If your net self-employment earnings are $400 or more, you file Schedule SE and owe 15.3% self-employment tax.
- You might never get a tax form. Platforms send a 1099-K only if you receive over $20,000 and more than 200 transactions in a year. Clients send a 1099-NEC only once they’ve paid you $2,000 or more. Either way, you still have to report all of your income.
- If your parents can claim you as a dependent, your 2026 standard deduction is the larger of $1,350 or your earned income plus $450, capped at $16,100. The $400 self-employment rule applies separately.
- If you expect to owe $1,000 or more, you generally need to pay estimated tax. The 2026 due dates are April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, then January 15, 2027.
- Financial aid: in the 2027-28 FAFSA formula, $12,220 of a dependent student’s income is protected. Earnings above that can reduce your aid. If you have a scholarship, check its terms for any income rules.
How to spot a fake online job
Losses to job scams rose from $90M in 2020 to $501M in 2024. Red flags from the FTC:
- They want money from you for training, “certification” or job placement.
- Fake checks: you deposit a check, send part of it back, and then the check bounces.
- Reshipping “jobs” and fees to get “certified” as a mystery shopper.
- Task scams: these start with a text or WhatsApp message about “app optimization” or “product boosting.” You get small payouts at first, then you’re asked to deposit your own money, often in crypto.
- Social media DMs: nearly 30% of people who lost money to scams in 2025 said it started on social media.
Report scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Old advice to ignore
- VIPKid: in 2021 it ended classes taught by teachers outside mainland China for K-12 students in China.
- Chegg Tutors: no longer operates.
- Old Rev rates: transcription now pays $0.40 to $1.10 per audio minute.
- Big salary numbers: the figures on major job sites are usually full-time salaries, not what you’ll earn from gigs.
Quick questions
Can I get an online job at 16? Yes, but your options are limited. Most platforms and PayPal require you to be 18. Your main routes are a Fiverr account that a parent owns and runs, or Swagbucks with a parent’s permission.
Which one pays out fastest? Prolific. Once your approved balance hits $6, you can cash out once every 24 hours. New users wait 72 hours between cash-outs until they’ve cashed out four times. Rev pays weekly, UserTesting pays 14 days after each test, and Fiverr earnings take 14 days to clear (7 for Seller Plus, Top Rated and Pro sellers). Anyone promising daily pay for “boosting” products is running a scam.
I only made a few hundred bucks. Do I still owe tax? Once your net self-employment earnings reach $400, you file Schedule SE. Below that, you still have to report the income. Ask a tax professional if you’re unsure.
Is online work better than a regular campus job? It’s more flexible, but pay is less predictable. Compare both in our list of the best jobs to make money in college.
Your first step tonight
If you’re 18 or older, set up PayPal (if you don’t have it yet), then create a Prolific account and answer its profile questions. It takes under 30 minutes. If you’re under 18, read Fiverr’s page for minors with a parent. If you’re on an F-1 visa, email your DSO first.
